'Up the bright moon rises from the sea; I share the same moment though far from thee.' On the occasion of the Chinese Traditional Festival—Mid-Autumn Festival, School of International Education held an online and offline “Chinese Bridge”, the culture experience activity of the Mid-Autumn Festival, in the foreign students' apartment on the afternoon of September 18, with the purpose of enabling the foreign students to get to know Chinese excellent traditional culture, and promoting exchanges between teachers and students.
At the beginning of the activity, Feng Junying, a teacher of Chinese as a foreign language, explained to the foreign students the myths related to the Mid-Autumn Festival, such as 'Hou Yi shooting down the nine suns from the sky', 'Chang’e flying to the moon', 'Moon Rabbit making heavenly medicine', 'Wu Gang chopping the osmanthus tree', etc., and introduced in detail the custom of eating moon cakes while admiring the full moon in the Mid-Autumn Festival. Two teachers, Ms. Wang Ting and Ms. Wang Mei, helped the foreign students staying on the campus to learn how to make ice moon cakes, from mixing flour, kneading dough, wrapping stuffing, pressing and shaping, to the product packaging. The foreign students were very concentrated and learned the mooncake making step by step with great interest. The flower shaped moon cakes were soon done, which was cheered by the online students. The activity center was filled with strong festival atmosphere.
Through making and tasting moon cakes, this culture experience activity enabled foreign students to appreciate the traditional Chinese culture that couldn’t be learned in books. Online and offline linkage also made overseas students feel the charm of Chinese traditional culture from zero distance, and enhanced their understanding and recognition of China.
